I was pleased with this one when I made it. I was pleased with the references to two major and famous components of the art world: the Turner Contemporary art gallery in Margate and one of the Anthony Gormley statues, that stands in the sea close to the gallery. I was pleased with how they are mentioned but don’t really feature and that it ends up with a child and their parent on the beach, drawing in the sand with a stick and sharing a shadow - that end up being the art.

It’s great there is a big gallery celebrating art in Margate and a famous sculpture too but I think I was trying to talk about how that doesn’t suddenly change life for everyone in the town and also that art sometimes doesn’t get any better for me than noticing natural moments and events - like two people being totally absorbed in drawing in the sand as the last minutes of the day’s sunlight throws a single dark shadow from them, so so long across the ground.

I like to think it’s a bit cinematic too. I may be wrong but that’s what I was trying to do. I’d be interested to hear what you think and how you see it.

This is quite a small print at around 14.8 x 21 cm and an edition of just 10 prints. It felt right for the feel of the story it tells.

I made it using fade resistant ink on a slightly textured, cotton rich, acid free, paper.
It is available unframed.

This print is a page from my book On a train home with the Sun in my eyes, should you wish to see it.

Hope you enjoy it
